Frequently asked questions

What are dermal fillers made of?

Dermal fillers are typically made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps to hydrate and add volume. Some fillers may contain other substances, such as calcium hydroxyapatite or poly-L-lactic acid.

How long do the results last?

The longevity of results depends on the type of filler used and the area treated. Most dermal fillers last between 6 to 18 months, though some can last longer.

Is the procedure painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal, as most fillers contain a numbing agent (lidocaine). A topical anesthetic can also be applied before the procedure to enhance comfort.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include temporary swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites. These effects usually subside within a few days.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

It’s best to avoid blood thinners, alcohol, and certain medications such as aspirin for a few days before the procedure to minimize bruising. Your practitioner will provide specific pre-treatment guidelines.

How long does the treatment take?

The procedure typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

Is there any downtime after treatment?

There is little to no downtime. You can return to most daily activities immediately after the procedure, though it's recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure for the first 24 hours.

How do dermal fillers differ from Botox?

Dermal fillers add volume to areas of the face, while Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. They are often used together for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Can I combine dermal fillers with other treatments?

Yes, dermal fillers can be combined with other treatments like Botox, laser treatments, or chemical peels to achieve more comprehensive results.

How soon will I see results?

Results are visible immediately after the procedure, with full effects settling within a few days once any swelling or redness diminishes.

Can dermal fillers be reversed?

Yes, hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase if the results are not as desired or complications occur.

Dermal Fillers Pre-Treatment Guidelines

  • Medication Restrictions: For 7-10 days before your procedure, avoid taking aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Aleve®, Celebrex®), as well as supplements like fish oil, Ginkgo Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E. These can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. Regular multivitamins and Tylenol® are allowed (if there are no contraindications).
  • Alcohol Consumption: Refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment to minimize the chances of bleeding and bruising.
  • Pain Management: If you are concerned about discomfort, you may take Tylenol® (if appropriate) about one hour before your appointment.
  • Cold Sore History: If you have a history of cold sores, please inform your doctor at least one week prior to your appointment so they can prescribe medication to prevent an outbreak.
  • Dental Procedures: Avoid any dental work, including cleanings, for 2 weeks before and after receiving fillers.
  • Clean Face: Arrive for your appointment with a clean face.
  • Pre-Appointment Snack: Have a small meal or snack before your appointment.
